The scenic waterways, pristine lakes, and secret Branson fishing holes are an angler’s paradise. Whether you are looking to battle the best fishermen in the world in the heat of competition or simply looking forward to a serene day on an idyllic lake, the forested hills of the Ozarks are the perfect place for an unforgettable fishing adventure. With three picturesque lakes loaded with prize fish, you won’t want to miss any of these excellent options on your next outing into the Great Outdoors.

Table Rock Lake

Branson’s most popular recreational lake, this expansive body of water shimmers a bright and vibrant blue beneath the Missouri sky, and its deep yet clear waters harbor an incredible diversity of fish for your angling adventures. Bass are the name of the game here, with largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, and white bass all lurking in the depths, waiting to outwit you (if they can). Thanks to the highly varied topography of the lake’s shoreline, there are plenty of narrow arms, bluffs, rapid depth changes, and underwater brush piles that create excellent fishing grounds. In addition to bass, you can also target paddlefish, catfish, bluegill, crappie, and walleye. Thanks to mild winters, you can even fish year-round.

Lake Taneycomo

Stretched out for 22-miles across the countryside and snaking through the downtown district of Branson, the cold and pure waters of Taneycomo resemble a river more than a lake. Either way, this is the primary fishing grounds for brown and rainbow trout, thanks to the stocking efforts of the nearby Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery. Fishermen can also hunt for bluegill, crappie, bass, and walleye, but trout is king in this gorgeous lake. During peak season the lake can be choked with fishing boats around the Branson city limits, but head farther afield and solitude awaits. Fly fishermen will also enjoy the shores of Taneycomo below Table Rock Dam, though be careful to pay attention to posted warnings regarding regulated water levels.

Taneycomo’s Secrets

Within Lake Taneycomo are a bevy of secret fishing holes. Two of our favorites are Lookout Hole and Short Creek. Lookout is marked by an island in the center of the lake, and the trout that congregate here are large, feisty, and aggressive. Bait quickly and keep your reel jerking if you want to boat these monsters. Even if you don’t, the surrounding woodland hills are breathtaking, and this is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Short Creek is just a mile below Fall Creek, on the opposite side of the lake. When the dam is not running, the waters here are shallow and a favorite spot for numerous types of fish to gather. This makes for easy pickings any time of year, making this a great spot for teaching beginners.

Bull Shoals Lake

Lesser known and located just a short drive away in Forsyth is this large lake full of scenic fishing spots. It is a haven for bass, catfish, and walleye, and the waters below the Powesite Dam are cool enough for trout fishing. There is even a park on the upper side of the dam that is a great picnic spot with panoramic views of the entire lake.

Choosing the right fishing spot and the proper bait can make all the difference between filling the cooler and going home empty-handed.
